Q: WHAT IS THE FIRST ITEM OF IMPORTANCE WHEN PLANNING MY LANDSCAPE?
A: The First Item of Importance is to decide HOW AM I GOING TO USE MY YARD? The flow and shape of the yard depends on things such as:
Do I entertain often? If so, how many people will I entertain? Am I going to B.B.Q. often? It’s California and we like being outdoors a lot! Do I have any pets? Pets can have an important impact on the landscape and sometimes we need to design an area for Lassie! These are but a few of the things we must talk about before you begin to design your project.
Q: AFTER I HAVE HAD MY PROJECT COMPLETED, HOW AM I GOING TO MAINTAIN IT?
A: When your project is completed, we leave you with the proper instructions for maintaining your special project. Generally, turf grass should be mowed weekly at 1 ½ inches to 2 inches in height to promote water retention and to inhibit weed growth. Shrubs should be pruned as needed and lightly; we don’t encourage severe pruning and hedging practices that take the plant’s natural form away. Watering should be done every other day for turf grass in the winter and every 2 days for shrubs. In the summer, you will need to increase the watering to a daily regimen, depending on the temperature. Our irrigation controllers make it easy for you to control your watering schedule so that no water waste is incurred, especially here in Southern California. And lets’ not forget our trees . . . it is important to place your trees on a yearly pruning schedule to promote health, proper growth and structural beauty!
Q: WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO FERTILIZE?
A: Generally, you should fertilize your yard 4 times a year. That’s right . . . WINTER, SPRING, SUMMER & FALL. But never fertilize when the temperature is considered HOT! There are some great “Weed n Feed” products available at your home and garden centers which inhibit weed growth and promote turf and shrub health. Just talk to your garden center associate. The important thing to remember is . . . stay away from extreme heat and be sure to water thoroughly when applying your chemicals.
